JOIN US FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL

We are hosting in-person Sunday School classes for young people between the ages of 4 and 20 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am every Sunday at our church. Child care is available on Sundays for children under 4 years old.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to introduce yourself to the Sunday School teacher and learn how we will conduct classes.

If you have questions, or if you are unable to attend in-person Sunday School and would like to request a special Zoom session on Sunday afternoon, please write to the church clerk 6thCSchurch@gmail.com.

Who May Attend?

All children between the ages of 4 and 20 may enroll and attend. Besides students, only the Sunday School teachers and Sunday School Superintendent may attend Sunday School classes.

What will be the Nature of the Sunday School Exercises?

Students will be taught the Scriptures and will learn about God’s love for them and the practical power of divine Truth and Love to heal in their lives.

Following the rules and order of services outlined in the Church Manual of the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston Massachusetts (Article XX, Sections 1-3 on pp. 62-63, and pp.127), their first lessons will be:

– The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)
– The Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13)
– The Spiritual Interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer by Mary Baker Eddy (SH 16:26-17:15)
– The Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3-12)

Students will be taught further lessons according to their individual interests, needs, and questions relating to Scriptural passages, which will most often draw from the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week.

How Can I Support My Child’s Spiritual Education at Home?

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all
thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I
command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou
shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk
of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou
walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou
risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand,
and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou
shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”
—Deuteronomy 6: 4-8

The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual laws, a belief which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease.”
—Science and Health p.62

God is our Father-Mother and is ever present. He is sending angel messages to each of us every moment to protect and guide us. It is a privilege and duty to set aside special time each day to learn about God and to listen to His direction, to pray for ourselves and for our children to be receptive to God’s spiritual guidance.

Families may choose to spend some time every morning to read the weekly Bible Lesson together out loud in part or in whole and to recite the Daily Prayer together :

“Thy kingdom come; let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!”

Children can be taught to recite the following every day upon waking and before going to sleep:

“Father-Mother God, Loving me, —
Guard me when I sleep;
Guide my little feet Up to Thee.”
—Mary Baker Eddy

Bible Lessons, Christian Science periodicals that include articles for children, commentaries on the Bible, and a number of children’s books are available at our Reading Room, which can help reinforce and give context to what they learn in Sunday School.

In addition to regular attendance at Sunday School, children are welcome to attend our Wednesday evening testimony meetings.

Finally, the Holy Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scripture by Mary Baker Eddy, are our guides in learning to better listen to God and to understand and follow his commandments. Parents and families can study these two books at home and consult them about any question. These books can also be found in our Reading Room, and a Sunday School teacher or Reading Room attendant can help guide you or your children to passages that can help you with your questions.
