We are a Christian Science Church located near American University in the northwest corner of Washington, D.C. We are a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston—also known as The Mother Church—founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879.
Mary Baker Eddy, who lived in New England in the United States, discovered Christian Science in the late 1800s. She was instantaneously healed after being diagnosed by a doctor with having fatal internal injuries from a fall on ice. She describes her healing, discovery and naming of Christian Science this way: “It was in Massachusetts, in February, 1866 … that I discovered the Science of divine metaphysical healing which I afterwards named Christian Science … The Bible was my textbook. It answered my questions as to how I was healed … I apprehended for the first time, in their spiritual meaning, Jesus’ teaching and demonstration, and the Principle and rule of spiritual Science and metaphysical healing, — in a word, Christian Science. I named it Christian, because it is compassionate, helpful, and spiritual.” (Retrospection and Introspection by Mary Baker Eddy)
