If you have questions, please email 6thChurchDCSundaySchool@gmail.com and address your question to the Superintendent of the Sunday School, Andrew Humphries.

What will be the Nature of the Sunday School Exercises?

The Sunday School will follow the rules and order of services outlined in the Church Manual of the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston Massachusetts (Article XX, Sections 1-3 on pp. 62-63, and pp.127, respectively).

Students will learn God’s love for them and the practical power of Love to heal in their lives. They will be taught the Scriptures and will be instructed according to their ability to understand the simpler meanings of the divine Principle they will be taught. The first lessons will be:

– The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)
– The Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13)
– The Spiritual Interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer by Mary Baker Eddy (SH 16:26-17:15)
– The Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3-12)

Students familiar with these subjects will then be taught according to their individual interests, needs, and questions relating to Scriptural passages, which will most often relate to the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week.

How will the Sunday School on Zoom Work?

Students who enroll will be sent a reminder to RSVP for the upcoming Sunday and a Zoom link they will need to click on to attend. (Those who have not downloaded Zoom will be automatically directed to do so by their computer when they click on the Zoom link before they can join.)

We will commence as a whole group with singing. The Lesson Subject, Golden Text, and Responsive Reading from the Christian Science Bible Lesson will be read together. Students will then be assigned to different classes according to their age via Zoom’s breakout room feature. Each breakout room will have its own Sunday School teacher. Near the end of the hour, students will return to the whole group to sing a final hymn and to stand for the Scientific Statement of Being.

What Technology and Materials Will be Required?

Students will require a computer or tablet with a working camera, microphone, speakers, and internet access to attend. They may also use a working microphone/headphone headset.

According to Article XX, Section 1 of the Church Manual we ask that students be provided a private space to attend the Sunday School Exercises, independent of parents or anyone of the age of 20 years or older.

Required texts will be provided to all students on screen (such as the elements of the Quarterly Bible Lesson that will be read together, hymn lyrics, and passages from the KJV Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy). Students are encouraged, however, to own and bring their own KJV Bible and a recent, authorized edition of Science and Health to each session. These books can be purchased at a local Christian Science Reading Room or online.

Please check the announcements sidebar for cancellations of services due to inclement weather.
